My hunt for bluebonnets began in late March as they started to come to bloom with their “short stacks”. Easter comes around and you begin looking around for the sitings of the beautiful flowers, which are also the official flower of Texas. Thanks to Lady Bird Johnson, she was a strong advocate for the planting of wildflowers along the Texas highways. Many more ensure that they have the beautiful flowers in their yards and lands as well. They will grow anywhere. Just look at some of the crazy places they will grow in sides of rock walls and curbside, as well.
Traditionally, I make the trek on a day trip to find the best bluebonnet photo that I can find. I think this year made up for the last few years not being a great finds. For example, since we had very little rains last year, the flower (normally very blue as seen in these photos) was very pale and nearly gray.
Starting out by taking photos here and there, my official trek this year didn’t start until on my birthday. I started out by going Southbound on FM 620 through Lake Travis and Lakeway…
then, heading Westbound on Hwy 71 through Dripping Springs, Paleface, and Spicewood, Texas….
then, heading Northbound on Hwy 281 through Marble Falls and Burnet, Texas…
then, heading Eastbound on Hwy 29 through Bertram and Liberty Hill, Texas, and…
then, back Southbound on Hwy 183 and wiggling back to FM 620.
Enjoy!!
