118th Official State of Texas Arbor Day Observance Friday, April 27, 10 a.m. to noon
An oak, specifically a descendant of Austin’s historic Treaty Oak, will be the star attraction at the 2007 statewide Arbor Day Ceremony starting at 10 a.m. this Friday, April 27, at the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. “Of all the oak species found in the United States, Texas has a striking 75 percent, ” said James Hull, State Forester, who will preside at the ceremony which will include music, speakers and a tree dedication. Tree books will be on sale all weekend at the store.
Arbor Day Activities
Plant trees on the school campus.
Have an Arbor Day Celebration.
Do Project Learning Tree activities.
Take your class on a tree identification hike around campus or within your community.
Do a web search for the benefits of trees and create a list with pictures.
Have a contest for students to find the oldest trees in the community and research the history of the tree. For example, when the tree was 10 years old, what was going on in your community, the nation, and/ or the world.
Have an essay contest where students describe the importance of trees to their community.
Dedicate library time for students to read books about trees and forests.
